Unlike SARS-2 before it emerged, hantavirus is known and has been studied; it is nowhere near as contagious as covid. But…
- It is far more lethal than covid; about one in three people known to have been infected with hantavirus die.
- There is no vaccine or antiviral
- Transmission is not completely understood
- There is a long incubation period
- It is not known how long after infection PCR tests begin to give correct results.
This is bad but, barring extremely foolish behavior on the part of US public health authorities—not a foregone conclusion, unfortunately—, not disastrous. Until this is under control, mask up while traveling.
