The Holy Wars of Modern Fascism

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which now governs Iran, is led by bellicose fanatics who dream of jihad, not in the sense of a personal struggle against evil, but rather in the sense of conquest. They are likely to fail in their dreams, but they can do a great deal of harm in the failing. But they are not much different from the Christian extremists that are influential in the US government, or the Israeli religious fanatics that are a powerful faction of Netanyahu's coalition, the Hindu fanatics that govern India, the Rakhine Buddhist fanatics that committed genocide in Myanmar, or a dozen other groups that are convinced that, somehow, glorious war and glorious genocide will bring about a golden future.

These intensely nationalist groups all hope for a glorious rebirth and—if you have read Griffin—you will recognize that this is what he called palingenetic ultranationalism—fascism. Can a world of fascist nations ever be peaceful?
