Should the Democrats retake power in 2029, they will be in a situation where the best courses of action will be deeply unpopular.
- Ending the war with Iran is going to involve negotiating a surrender.
- Repairing the United States international relations is going to require concessions to foreign powers
- Raising taxes, to restore United States social insurance programs that were cut by the Republicans and to maintain the United States as a military power.
- Dealing with the continuing consequences of climate change
To right the ship of state, it will be necessary to pursue justice internally, and this means prosecuting many of the worst malefactors of this administration and clawing back the money they have taken, as well as undertaking steps similar to those that victors in a civil war would take. At the least, Republican Congressional leaders should be jailed and the most egregiously corrupt Supreme Court justices should be removed.
I hope the Democratic leadership in 2029 will recognize that they’re in a situation where they’re going to alienate voters regardless, and do the right thing. The Democrats need leaders who, like Churchill, will be able to say to the public, “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat” and still retain popular support.
Also, send Netanyahu to The Hague!
